Sons found themselves 2-0 down at half time but Mitch Megginson’s goal gave them a life line with nine minutes to go, they then had several chances to equalise but Raith held on.

Ian Murray’s side have had a tendency to start games slowly this season and Campbell wants them to start on the front foot when they welcome bottom of the table Livingston to the Rock on Saturday.

He told SportScene: “The first half we were terrible to be honest, all over the place, we let them dominate the game hence the reason they went 2-0 up.

“The gaffer had a word with us at half time and we were on top from the start of the second half. Mitch got us a goal and after that we had so many chances to equalise. In the last minute their keeper has pulled off a wonder save to prevent us from picking up a point “We probably deserved a draw but you can’t leave yourself a mountain to climb like we did. We don’t start games too often on the front foot, it takes us a while to get going, I think if we did that we would win a lot more games.” The 24-year-old forward had been utilised by Ian Murray in a wide midfield role in the club’s recent fixtures.

But with the departure of Chris Kane and the change of shape to a version of 3-5-2 on Saturday, he was deployed in his favoured striking role alongside Garry Fleming. Campbell is relishing the prospect of getting more game time up front He said: “I hope I can get more chances there, I have just been delighted to be playing. My natural position is a striker so I’d be delighted to get a run up there but I’m happy to do a job out wide for the team.” The former Greenock Morton man revealed that he has enjoyed his time at the Rock and would welcome a longer stay at the club — but admits it is down to him to earn a new deal.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time here, it’s a good club to be part of. I have to perform on the park for the gaffer to offer me a deal. It’s down to the manager but if he offers me a deal there is no reason why I wouldn’t take it.
