DUMBARTON Academy secured a hard fought 2-0 victory away to Westerlands in the Caledonian League Premier Division on Saturday.

The first opportunity of the match came Accies Mark Pawsey’s way - but the forward hit his shot straight at the Westerlands’ keeper.

Westerlands responded and created their own chance, but missed the target from six yards out.

They were left to rue missing the chance, as Accies opened the scoring through a piece of good fortune.

A Colin MacPhee cross following a pass from Jack Buchanan saw a Westerlands defender put the ball into his own net.

Accies lead was preserved through a piece of good goalkeeping from Andrew McGillivray, who stood up well to block a shot.

Accies then saw the Westerlands keeper produce two good saves, from Mark Pawsey and Alan Sweeney - both opportunities created by captain Jack Buchanan.

Westerlands then missed an opportunity to equalise on half time. A deep cross into Accies box landed nicely for their striker. The forward blasted the ball wide when it looked easier to score.

Accies started the second half with more urgency in their play.

Alan Sweeney brought out a great save from the Westerlands keeper.

Accies then extended their lead. A Pawsey cross reached Alan Sweeney. Sweeney’s shot hit a defender and landed at the alert Andrew MacDonald, who produced a powerful shot which saw the net bulge.

Westerlands kept plugging away, but the Accies defence was marshalled well led by Marcus Dooley and Leo Daremas. This prevented Westerlands creating clear opportunities.

Accies’ Conor McGlinchey then saw a header hit the post following an Ian Davie cross. The final piece of action saw an Andrew MacDonald shot saved.

Accies manager, Michael Dickie, was pleased at securing the points, said: “I am always pleased when we pick up three points and secure a clean sheet.”

Wednesday’s tie against Dalziel was postponed, and Accies host Doune Castle this weekend, before travelling to Beith Meadowside in the second round of the Alona West of Scotland Cup.

Accies have been drawn away to Stenhousemuir Community in the quarter-final of the Douglas Smith League Cup, with a date for the tie to be confirmed.
