Loch Lomond RFC 10 Dunbar RFC 16 (SHE Plate Round Two)
LOMOND saw their dream of a spring run-out at the home of Scottish Rugby wither and die in the wake of an abject performance against a capable, but ultimately beatable Dunbar side on Saturday.
Despite dominating possession and territory for most of the match, Lomond were inexplicably several yards off the pace and lacking the necessary cutting edge.
Dunbar scored the only try of the first half when a simple switch move in the centres allowed the full-back to canter home beneath the posts for a try easily converted.
After tearing their own hair out with errors galore, Lomond finally registered a penalty to move within four points after the restart.
It might have been a turning point, but Dunbar had other ideas, marching straight up the other end of the field to kick a penalty of their own.
Two more penalties put them 13 points ahead with the clock running down, but Lomond then sprang into action.
The pack hurtled into the fray and in the backs Fairman, Nicholson and Flynn punched gaping holes in the defence to come within inches of a try.
Malone finally made the breakthrough and Nicholson converted to set up a tense finale, but Dunbar held on.
Loch Lomond: A Flynn (c), S Cowie, G Mathieson, D Nicholson, D Lockhart, A Fairman, C Lewsley, M Flynn, E Todd, B Malone, G McDermott, D McGinty, I Norrie, S Dennison, P Sakerski. Subs: B Turner, A McAdam, G Tilley, J Law.
Lomond face high-flying Clydebank in their next fixture when they travel to Whitecrook on Saturday.
