Vale of Leven 2 Johnstone Burgh 0

HUGH HAMILL'S Vale of Leven side stormed to the top of their League Cup Section with a 2-0 victory over Johnstone Burgh at Millburn Park on Saturday.

The Vale currently have a one- hundred-per-cent record but are not guaranteed to progress as both Port Glasgow and Renfrew still maintain an interest.

The Alexandria side have also kept three clean sheets so far, giving Hugh Hamill's men a

huge chance of winning the section.

Alan Lees was skipper for the day and Vale's third captain in as many ties, however, the changing of the armband did little to hamper the Millburn Park side.

George Walker's Burgh side proved stiff competition for the Vale and it wasn't until the 75th minute before the deadlock was finally broken.

Hugh Ward opened the scoring after some good work from Mark Pawsey. Substitute Ward had only been on the pitch for seven minutes before beating his marker to lash home from 18 yards out.

Jack Buchannan doubled the Vale's lead two minutes later to round up the result, giving the Vale nine points from nine games.

Hugh Hamill's side needs only one point to progress from the group but the Vale manager knows Port Glasgow and Renfrew won't be looking to do him any favours.

He said: "We've started well.

"We played well against Greenock on Wednesday but maybe the Burgh game was a bit of a struggle.

"That's three games now and we haven't conceded a goal which is great.

"Also we've scored eight in three goals and I didn't really think we scored enough goals last season.

"Obviously Pawsey has been classic but I'd like others to chip in as well.

"But really so far, everyone has played well.

"Port Glasgow will give us a tough game, they were unlucky to be relegated last season.

"There's a big incentive there for us if we win but we'll need to watch we don't get complacent."

The Vale's victory over the Burgh comes four days after the Vale's 5-0 demolition of Greenock on Wednesday evening.

Hitman Mark Pawsey rattled in a hat-trick in the first 24 minutes before laying on Brian Smith for the fourth. Hugh Ward completed the rout to give the Vale an impressive victory over Greenock.

Kick off at Millburn Park tomorrow night (Wednesday) is 7:15pm as the Vale look to progress into the next round of the Sectional League Cup.
