Peterhead 1 Dumbarton 2
A last-minute solo effort from substitute Derek Carcary produced Dumbarton's first win of the season at Peterhead on Saturday - and lifted the Sons off the bottom of the table.
In a hard-fought victory Dumbarton had to come from behind to claim the points.
Manager Jim Chapman said: "It was good to get the first win and get the monkey off our back.
"We knew if we hung in there our chance would come and today we took our chances.
"We are looking for this to kick start our season."
Jan Vojacek, Mick Dunlop, Iain Chisholm and Scott Chaplain made the starting line up, while Alan Cook was promoted from the under-19s for is debut.
The first half was a stop-start affair with
little in the way of flowing football but with the home side creating the better chances.
Fifteen minutes in, Peterhead's David Ross outpaced Dunlop but shot wide, and five
minutes later Sharp broke the offside trap but fired his shot off the crossbar.
In response, Dumbarton raced to the other end and keeper Bateman spilled a Denis McLaughlin shot from 25 yards, but nobody was following up.
Craig then shot wide from outside the box before a last-ditch tackle from Ben Gordon thwarted Ross.
After McVitie fired over, Chaplain and Chris Craig both had headed chances but couldn't find the target.
The second half was dominated by the performances of substitutes.
Firstly the home side went ahead when substitute Peter Bruce pounced on a wayward shot from Ross and steered the ball past
Vojacek.
The home side took heart and looked the likelier team to score until Sons boss Jim Chapman made an inspired double substitution just after the hour.
Derek Carcary and Stevie Murray came off the bench and both played a major part in turning Dumbarton's fortunes around.
Carcary had an immediate impact when his first touch was a cross which Bateman punched out to McLaughlin, but the striker blasted over the bar.
Five minutes after making his entry, Murray netted the equaliser when he intercepted a sloppy defensive pass and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
For the last 10 minutes, Gordon sustained an ankle injury which severely restricted his movement.
With all Dumbarton's substitutions already having been made, he moved up front and the defence was reshuffled.
After McVitie wasted Peterhead's last chance, Dumbarton broke up field and sealed the points.
From an unpromising position near their own corner flag, Chisholm picked out Carcary on the right touchline midway inside his own half.
Derek set off on a mazy run, leaving defenders in his wake before shooting home from just inside the box. The players' wild celebrations indicated exactly what the victory meant to them.
Carcary said: "I have scored a few good goals in my career but at the moment this feels like the best of them.
"It means so much to get our first win of the season."
