Loch Lomond 25 Oban Lorne 10
LOMOND got their season back on track on Saturday with a fine win over a bruising Oban.
The windy weather conditions surprisingly had little bearing on the overall result and the crowd were treated to an entertaining game.
In the opening exchanges both sides gave away a series of penalties that resulted in the ball being pinged around by their respective kickers until finally Lomond gave up a kickable chance that Oban gratefully accepted to take the lead.
The home side were not about to take that lying down and from the restart forced their way back into the game with some determined phases of play involving both forwards and backs.
It was Fairman who made the crucial breakthrough, collecting a pass from Flynn and selling a dummy to his own backline, as well as the opposition, to dive over for a great individual score.
Nicholson nailed the conversion and then minutes later another moment of Fairman magic carried them further into the lead.
The twinkle-toed stand-off took possession in a seemingly innocuous position on half-way, but instead of releasing the waiting Ferrier, grubbered a kick-between overeager Oban defenders to instantly set up a three-man overlap.
The stand-off was first to his own kick and after gathering dived over in the corner for another excellent try.
This time Nicholson was unable to convert from the wide angle, but Lomond appeared to be in control and Oban looked to be out of ideas.
But Oban hit back when a clever kick from their stand-off into the corner led to a scrum close to the line and created the chance they had been waiting for to get back into the match.
With a feint to the touch-line, they were able to briefly wrong-foot the home defence and create a gap into which their flanker gleefully charged to score a great try.
The tricky conversion was nailed to make the half-time score just 12-10 in Lomond's favour.
After the break Lomond were relentless - with ferocious rucking and mauling creating huge gaps in the visitor's defence.
After sustained pressure good work by the backs eventually allowed Lockhart to race over from 30 yards.
Nicholson slotted the conversion to complete the scoring but Lomond could easily have added to their tally.
Their next challenge is addressing their away form when they travel to Paisley next week.
