DISMAL SONS' FORM GOES ON

Brechin City .... 1

DUMBARTON slumped to their fourth successive defeat against Brechin City on Saturday and will still be wondering how it happened.

For the second time in a week Dumbarton enjoyed plenty of possession, played some entertaining football and were on the receiving end of a sucker punch.

Once again the pack was shuffled as the Sons embark on a mountain of fixtures in March.

Clark, Geggan and Carcary came into the starting line up with McStay, Brannan and Winters dropping out.

The visitors started on the offensive and almost scored in three minutes when White was forced to save a Byers shot after seeing it late.

Dyer stepped inside two challenges before his shot struck Gordon.

Dumbarton responded with two quick attacks where crosses by Carcary and Murray were cut out by goalkeeper Nelson.

Carcary then cut inside a defender but couldn't beat Walker with his shot.

After 25 minutes a Clark free kick was knocked back across goal, but Carcary could only stab his shot wide.

Next a Chisholm cross was headed by Wyness, but it just evaded the reach of Carcary.

As half time approached Clark was just too high with a 30-yard effort, whilst Carcary reacted to a quick Clark free kick but lifted the ball over the bar as Nelson advanced. Two minutes before the interval Clark went down in the area.

Referee Hilland waived aside claims for a penalty.

Whilst Dumbarton were arguing, City raced to the other end and McAllister should have done better than shoot weakly wide from 18 yards.

In the early exchanges of the second half, Wyness had two half chances but couldn't trouble the goalkeeper.

Murray shot over with an ambitious 25-yarder before City struck against the run of play. McAllister drove in a 30-yard free kick, White parried and Byers was the quickest to react to stroke the ball home off the inside of the post.

From then City were prepared to concede possession and hit on the counter.

Clark and Geggan shot over from distance before a Dunlop header was deflected for a corner.

The best chance of the second half fell to Wyness who knocked a Dunlop header into the arms of the grateful Nelson when it seemed easier to score.

As desperation set in Chisholm and Hunter had half chances but couldn't convert.

Dumbarton will have to pick themselves up quickly with another two games in the coming week with results required to prevent the ogre of the bottom end of the table beckoning.

Dumbarton: White, Chisholm, Smith, Dunlop, Gordon, Clark, Geggan, (Hunter 69), McNiff, (O'Donoghue 49), Carcary, Wyness, Murray (Chaplain 69).

Subs not used: Brannan, Vojacek.

FORMULA One racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart was back in his home town of Dumbarton on Wednesday.

The three-time world champion was on hand to open the new children's section at Dumbarton Library, pictured, and also took part in a question and answer session at Strathclyde Homes Stadium.

It was a special day for all who got the chance to meet the charismatic Milton man, including our very own reporter Andrew Gibson.
