HIGHS AND LOWS: Dumbarton couldn't reproduce the form which they did on Tuesday when Ben Gordon opened the scoring against Alloa

DUMBARTON slipped to their fifth defeat in six outings when they conceded a late goal at Ochilview on Saturday.

Confidence was high going into the match, after a fantastic result against league leaders Alloa on Tuesday.

But in a game of few chances against Stenhousemuir, with both central defences outstanding, it always looked like one goal would be enough to settle it.

And the goal, when it came, was a quality strike rather than a mistake.

After six minutes Hunter produced the first shot at goal but McCluskey was untroubled.

The same player had a shot blocked shortly afterwards in the first instance of bodies preventing shots reaching the goalkeeper.

The home side responded and a Scullion shot was blocked on the edge of the penalty area. With 18 minutes on the clock, a Thomson corner was headed goalwards by Gibb but Cook was on hand to clear the ball off the goal-line.

As half time approached Hunter shot over after lead up work from Chisholm and Winters while Diack set up Dalziel, but after a fine turn his shot was too high.

In the opening moments of the second half Wyness set up Winters but his shot was held by McCluskey.

At the other end the Warriors had a double chance to take the lead.

Firstly a Scullion effort was deflected for a corner by Dunlop and from the award, Thom rose above the Dumbarton defence and powered a header goal-wards. But Jan Vojacek was alert enough to push the ball over for another corner.

Dumbarton broke to the other end but Hunter wasted a good opportunity when receiving a Winters' pass. Headers from Dalziel and Thom were competently dealt with by Vojacek before Carcary wasted a glorious chance to put Dumbarton in front. Wyness cut in from the left and picked out Carcary, but from eight yards out he fired wildly over the bar from excellent position. At the other end Molloy raced clear but Chisholm made up a lot of ground to retrieve the situation. Chisholm then conceded a free kick which Thomson drove goal wards where Vojacek punched clear.

Dumbarton's final chance came six minutes from time when a Dunlop cross was cleared by Gibb as Winters was picking his spot.

Stenhousemuir manager John Coughlin then pulled the master stroke when he replaced Dalziel with Quinn. Within seconds a Scullion cross found its way to the replacement and Quinn drilled a vicious shot beyond Vojacek for the winning goal.
