Dumbarton 1

Peterhead 3

PETERHEAD gave Dumbarton a lesson on how to win matches by using the elements on Saturday.

Playing with a strong wind in the first half, Dumbarton played patient football, trying to create chances along the way.

But the visitors demonstrated no such caution in the second period, launching the ball into the box at every opportunity.

It paid dividends with three goals, after going behind, two of them wind assisted.

The game started promisingly for the home team with Ross O'Donoghue and Stevie Murray just failing to find team-mates as the wind took hold of the ball.

Midway through the half, the visitors created their first opportunity when a Moore corner was headed on by Bobby Mann, but Martin Bavidge couldn't keep his header down from six yards.

Moore followed with a 30-yard effort which was too high.

On the half-hour, O'Donoghue used the elements for the first time but his 25-yard effort didn't trouble Jarvie.

Shortly afterwards, Dunlop had the ball in the net but was adjudged to be offside. The final move of the half saw O'Donoghue and Murray create a chance for Winters but he couldn't make proper contact.

Three minutes into the second period, Dumbarton took the lead. Dunlop again found space to create the perfect cross for Scott Chaplain to score at the back post.

Barely five minutes later though the teams were level. A Moore corner was not properly cleared and fell to Barry Wilson on the edge of the box. He took no time in lashing the ball home.

The second goal came when Bavidge crossed the ball into the box and wind assisted it deceived Vojacek to land in the net.

The scorer's lack of celebration demonstrated his embarrassment at finding the net from a poor cross.

Dumbarton went in search of the equaliser and Derek Carcary was crowded out before substitute goalkeeper Bateman dropped a cross ball, but Dennis Wyness could only steer the ball over the top.

Vojacek had to watch a free-kick from Strachan, from well out, but learned little as the visitors sealed victory with 10 minutes remaining.

The Czech goalkeeper cleared the ball to Mann who looked up and lifted the ball over the stranded stopper from the halfway line.

An angry Jim Chapman blasted: "I would have been embarrassed if our development sides had lost the second and third goals, never mind our first team.

"I feel sorry for the outfield players who put so much into the game."

Dumbarton: Vojacek, Chisholm, Smith, Dunlop, Gordon, O'Donoghue, Geggan, (Carcary 46), Chaplain, Winters, Wyness, Murray. Subs not used: Clark, Hunter, McStay, White.
