A DENNIS Wyness double was enough for Dumbarton to pick up a much-needed three points from a close fought encounter at Stirling.

The win puts distance between the play-off zone at the bottom and keeps alive hopes of reaching the play-offs at the top end of the table.

After an early half chance when Chaplain just failed to reach a Wyness knock down, Dumbarton were on the back foot in the early stages.

Gordon and Geggan were required to clear dangerous situations in front of goal before White saved easily from a Page header. An Aitken corner found Russell, whose header was cleared off the line by a combination of defender and goalkeeper.

Shortly after, an Aitken cross evaded everyone when a touch was all that was required to open the scoring.

From a rare sortie up field, a Brannan cross picked out Wyness and his header brought a fine save from Christie.

Again Albion returned to the attack and Russell shot into the side netting from a good position whilst a Colquhoun header from a corner was kicked off the goal-line by Smith.

As the half drew to a close, a one two between Brannan and Wyness set up the youngster but his shot was well saved.

But Albion took the lead five minutes into the second half.

A throw in from Graham was only partially cleared and Taggart was on hand to drill the ball home from 15 yards.

Dumbarton responded within four minutes.

A White free-kick just outside his own penalty area was allowed to bounce by the home defence and Wyness was first to react and lift the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.

Albion were next to threaten when a Graham header from an Aitken cross was cleared off the line by Clark.

The introduction of Carcary changed the game in Dumbarton's favour.

He had a shot saved at the second attempt before he ran on to a Dunlop through ball but his cross evaded everybody.

Nine minutes from time Dumbarton scored the winner.

Again Carcary made space inside the box and his cross ball found Wyness in splendid isolation six yards out.

The experienced striker stroked the ball home with aplomb.

The teams then swapped late chances.

From a Graham cross, Mullen chested the ball down but far enough away to allow White to collect.

And in the final minute Carcary seized on a short pass back but Christie saved with his legs.

Jim Chapman was happy to collect the points and said: "We had to battle hard against a Stirling side who play good open football.

"We had to match them and then take our chances, which we did.

"We will continue to accrue as many points as we can and see where that takes us."

Dumbarton: White, Clark, Smith, Dunlop, Gordon, McNiff, Geggan, Chaplain, Winters, (Carcary) Wyness, Brannan (Murray). Subs not used: Chisholm, O'Donoghue, Vojacek.
