Loch Lomond RFC 64 Strathclyde Police RFC 0

LOMOND kicked off a run of four consecutive home matches at the Dilly on Saturday in the best possible style when they utterly overwhelmed basement boys Strathclyde Police.

Steven Ferrier set the tone for the afternoon from the very first whistle after Lomond's backs ran their opponent's weak kick-off straight back at them.

Fast hands and a slick miss-move created half a gap for the strong-running centre to charge through and he cantered home from all of 50 metres.

Ferrier went on to enjoy a great afternoon's work and by the time the referee had eventually put the police out of their misery, he had helped himself to a hat-trick.

Throughout a desperate 80 minutes for the visitors, they found no respite from constant Lomond pressure in every area of the field.

Outside centre Gregor Mathieson grabbed Lomond's second try, ghosting past despairing tacklers to touch down only minutes after the opener and an avalanche of points soon followed as Scott Newport, Jamie Thomson, Darren Nicholson and Manus Flynn (3) all added to Lomond's tally.

The pick of the home scores came from Thomson, who combined well with Ferrier and then showed tremendous pace and power to confound several defenders before charging over after carrying brilliantly from inside his own half.

Nicholson added seven conversions to a try of his own to cap a great afternoon for the home side, but there were some strong performances throughout the Lomond team.

Skipper Andrew Flynn provided a startling five assists and the unlikely figure of Lomond's bombastic prop, Ian Norrie, provided a further two assists.

There's no doubt that Lomond will face tougher tests before the season is out but it would be churlish to find fault after such a commanding performance.

The Police also deserve great credit for doggedly sticking to their guns throughout the 80 minutes and, despite the one-sided nature of the contest, stubbornly refusing to lie down. Lomond would like to thank the spectators who came along and their sponsors Sakerski Bodyshop and The Village Rest, for their generous support.
