FOLLOWING his injury scare against Forfar, Dumbarton striker Pat Walker knows how important it is to stay fit and keep playing well to remain in Alan Adamson's starting 11.

Fortunately after extensive work with the physio, Walker was only ruled out for a week, but the striker knows that competition is tough.

He told Sport Scene: "The manager has brought in some quality players and the boys in the strips know they need to keep playing well to keep their place."

Walker believes that the strong squad assembled by Adamson could go on to have a successful season.

He added: "We have been a wee bit up and down so far but if we can get a few back to back wins that could push us right up the league because it is that tight.

"In this league everyone will beat everyone, we were gutted to lose to Arbroath so if they are top of the league we have nothing to fear."

Fellow striker David Winters replaced Walker against Forfar and he had a perfect start as he scored with almost his first touch after coming on.

However, following his red card for violent conduct meant he is banned from the Sons next game against Stenhousemuir on October 15.

But manager Alan Adamson is more than happy with the players he has in reserve as he explained that suspensions and injuries were always going to play a part in the season.

He said: "That is why we signed more players, we have a very good squad.

"It has just been part of the Dumbarton rollercoaster, we're very good one week, very poor the next."
