Lomond dominated early possession; a neat Ferrier kick allowed McKenzie to pressurise his opposite winger and secure territorial advantage.

The away side’s pack secured the ball and worked through a couple of phases before Lanark were penalised for coming off their feet, allowing Ferrier to take an early three points. Mathieson returned the kick-off with a pin point effort that put the pressure straight back on Lanark.

Flynn stole the resulting line out and Dennison appeared to squeeze the ball over the line, but was adjudged to have been held up.

Lomond were penalised from the resulting scrum. An inability to talk through captain Newport saw them repeatedly marched back 10 yards and Lanark were soon rewarded with a kickable penalty to level the scores.

Lomond failed to secure the ball from the restart and looked vulnerable as half-time approached. The forwards defended a line out close to their line — but Lanark ripped the ball from the defensive maul and ran in a simple try. 8-3 at half-time.

In the second half replacement Craig Norrie made an immediate impact with some direct running and scrum half Robertson looked dangerous in the loose but points proved elusive.

Lomond pushed on for the win and a quick tap penalty from McGinty saw him charge 20 metres up the park and secure a penalty 35 metres from goal. Mathieson hit it straight as a die, but it fell agonisingly short.

More ill discipline from the 22 drop out allowed Lanark to clear their lines and the game ended when they missed a long range three point attempt from yet another Lomond penalty. The match finished 8-8.
