Doom-Hamers shock Sons

FIRST Division Queen of the South outclassed Dumbarton in the Co-operative Insurance Cup at Palmerston, although the margin of victory was a little harsh on the visitors.
Queens, nicknamed the Doonhamers, dominated the first half but after going three down Dumbarton rallied, scoring once and creating more opportunities. But against the run of play the home side scored a fourth to kill the tie.
Man of the match David Weatherston almost put Queens in front in the opening minute but he fired his shot just wide.
This set the pattern for the half as Dumbarton couldn't get a foothold in the game. A Burns cross just evaded two attackers before being scrambled clear and then an Allan Johnston cross had a similar result.
In 18 minutes the opening goal came when a four man move led to a Weatherston cross picking out Derek Holmes who bulleted a header past the helpless Stephen Grindlay.
Holmes doubled the lead 10 minutes later when he converted a penalty, awarded for handball against Gordon.
He could have completed his hat-trick just before the break but fired wide after picking up a poor Grindlay clearance.
Queens created a couple of half chances in the second half before going three up in 56 minutes when a glorious Weatherston pass picked out Johnston who strolled into the box to drive beyond Grindlay.
Rather than capitulating, Dumbarton responded and took the ascendancy, scoring two minutes later when a Scott Chaplain cross was knocked down by Paul Maxwell into the path of Derek Carcary who fired the ball home from close range.
Carcary returned the favour with a free-kick which Maxwell directed just wide.
Next, Maxwell flicked on a long ball and Carcary's shot was saved by the legs of keeper Lee Robinson.
A break away led to a good Weatherston turn and shot which Grindlay saved.
Within a minute the home side killed the tie when Weatherston raced clear, drew Grindlay then calmly and unselfishly squared the ball for Rocco Quinn to seal the tie.
Dumbarton again responded and Chaplain fired over from 25 yards whilst Carcary picked up a loose ball on the half way line before setting off on a mazy run, but unfortunately he fired his shot wide.
In 88 minutes Queens rubbed salt in the wounds when a McLaren cross was controlled and drilled home by substitute Gavin Reilly. Disappointed Dumbarton boss Jim Chapman reckoned the game would have been a different story had his side converted their chances.
He said: "We didn't compete in the first half. Every time they had the ball, they looked like scoring. We went for it in the second half and had chances to make it 3-2. It would have been a different game then."
