That's one Del of a winner
Dumbarton.................1
Stenhousemuir..........0
DUMBARTON finally recorded their first league win of the season thanks to a superb solo effort from sub Derek Carcary in the second half.
Manager Jim Chapman rang the changes after the heavy defeat in their last game against East Fife at Methil and they paid off against Stenny.
Both Tony Wallace and Stirling Smith made their league debuts for the club.
Michael White replaced Stephen Grindlay in goal after the latter had picked up an injury in training and youngster Craig Winslow was on the bench as back up keeper.
The opening 15 minutes saw little in the way of goalmouth action as both teams failed to take the initiative and it was the 17-minute mark when both sides had their first chance.
After good work from Jon McShane in the box, Sons won a corner that was cleared by the visitor’s defence.
Stenny then broke upfield and a cross from the right was blasted over by ex-Son Clark. The best move of the match so far came on 24 minutes when Scott Chaplain sent his marker the wrong way with some nifty footwork and ran in on goal.
His low shot was well saved by Brown. The game had now opened up and Scott Dalziel tested White with a stinging effort that was well saved. White was in action again saving a shot from Anderson before Stirling fired over.
Dumbarton were quickly into their stride in the second half when McShane, who was posing a number of questions of Warriors’ defence, flicked the ball across the face of the goal, and with the goal gaping, Chaplain failed to get the vital touch.
Smith blasted over a free-kick, before a tackle on McShane resulted in him being stretchered off with an ankle injury
Curiously, referee Charleston took no action on that tackle, despite taking exception to just about everything else. He waved the yellow card 10 times in a far from dirty match. And Paul Nugent was shown a second yellow deep into added time.
The injury proved to be the turning point of the match, with Carcary coming on as sub. Not only did he prove to be too fast for the Stenhousemuir defence, but also for the nearside assistant ref.
On the one occasion he kept his flag down, Carcary streaked away from the chasing defenders, and rounded the keeper to slot home the winner on 77 minutes. In addition to his goal, he hit the post with a fine drive on 82 minutes to complete and impressive half hour’s work.
While far from the finished article, this was a welcome improvement on the last outing and the three points takes Sons off the bottom of the table.
Dumbarton: White, Chisholm, McNiff, McManus, Nugent, McStay (Geggan 69), Wallace, Chaplain, McShane (Carcary 63), Campbell (G Smith 85), S Smith. Subs (not used): Gordon, Winslow.
