Lochgilphead Red Star 2 St Patrick's FB (B) 2
THERE was a carnival atmosphere at Ropework Park as St Patrick"s (B) team sealed the league title.
It felt like the whole village had turned up to watch and they were joined by some 30 supporters who travelled through from Dumbarton.
Red Star was obliged to win the game to claim the championship while St Pat"s, two points better off, were in a more comfortable position.
Red Star had the better of the first half and fully deserved their half-time lead when their Polish centre forward scored just after the half hour mark.
This should have been a springboard, but the Saints had other ideas and started to excert themselves as the half progressed.
A minute into the second half, Thomas Bissett turned two defenders before squaring the ball into the path of Kevin McGinley who finished the move in style.
This stunned the local crowd but worse was to come.Play moved from end to end without too much fuss, but with 15 minutes remaining, Mark McLeod was barged inside the penalty area giving the referee no option but to point to the spot.
Having converted an 89th minute penalty against Carlton to win the game last Tuesday, John Hamill stepped forward for another pressure kick.
But he certainly didn"t let it show, leaving the keeper floundering as the ball hit the back of the net.
St Pat"s suffered a late equaliser in the last minute to jangle their nerves but the destination of the championship was safely secured for the Saints. The club would like to thank the Lochgilpead team and support who, despite their disappointment, were in great spirits and made the day an occasion to remember.
