PAUL Nugent has given his verdict on the Second Division season and reckons it's vital Dumbarton make a strong start to their league campaign.

However, the Sons skipper has warned his team-mates that won't be easy.

This month's fixtures sees Alan Adamson's troops play away from home three times with

Nugent insists they can't make the same mistakes as last season which saw them lose their first four games but will have to fight for the points away from home.

He said: "How we perform really depends on the start we have. We have a few injuries which isn't ideal but hopefully they clear up and the squad comes together.

"We're looking for a play-off spot. We weren't good enough last season to get in so I wasn't disappointed to miss out.

"I was happy to miss out on the play-off to go down. It would be a nice start to if we were able to get a

couple of victories in out first few games.

"I think we have three out of four first league games are away matches which will be difficult.

"You want to play at home but it will be good to come back to the Rock and build confidence after the away games.

"Any run is important in this league. We went on a run of six or seven wins last season and that's what kept us in the division.

"It depends on the start we have but I would be happy with a play-off spot."

Nugent has pinpointed

"If you look at the favourite, I think Brechin as they have strengthened their squad.

"But they have lost Rory McAllister who was their best player. I didn't think they were brilliant last season but he made the difference so it will be interesting to see how they manage without him. Arbroath will be stuffy and Forfar have players who have played in the division for a while."

Meanwhile, Dumbarton were drawn with Berwick Rangers at home in the second round of the Ramsdens Cup last Tuesday.

The tie takes place on Tuesday August 9 at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium, kick-off 7.45pm.

Tickets will be £10, with concessions £5.

Dumbarton's first league clash with Airdrie United kicks off at 3pm on Saturday at the New Broomfield Stadium.
