THE Vale hosted their first home Western District Cricket Union Championship league game of the season with the visit of Inverclyde to lesser Millburn.

Captain Chris Dalby won the toss and asked the men from the tail of the bank to bat.

The visitors stuck to the task well and gradually build a fine score without the loss of many wickets.

Four dropped catches did not help the Vale's cause.

However, Graham Lawrence (wicket keeper for the day) joined the Vale's attack.

Graham picked up three wickets which helped to curtail the Inverclyde run rate.

They ended their innings on a reasonable 151 for 9.

The Vale opened well with a steady run rate.

Alex McAdam and Chris Dalby lead the way.

However, when Alex was on 35 he was caught on the boundary by a fielder who appeared to have crossed over the line.

The fielding side were given the decision.

Chris lost his wicket for 38 with Vale still short of 40 runs from victory.

Gareth Millier took up the challenge with some splendid fours.

A mid-order collapse did rock the Vale. Fortunately, Gareth marshalled the lower order well and hit two fours off the second last over of the game to give the Vale a hard fought win.

The Vale ended on 155 for 8 with Gareth carrying his bat for a match winning 28 not out.

The Vale are in a difficult league this season and must beat the few teams of similar stature that are in the league.

This victory will give the lads great confidence.

Any slackness in the field will be punished by the top sides. However, a victory can work wonders.

Saturday's ball was sponsored by Kirkintilloch Diesel.

The Vale are home to Strathclyde in the league next Saturday.

The Vale is the only cricket club in West Dunbartonshire and is looking to recruit new players, especially from the Clydebank, Dumbarton and Vale of Leven areas.

The Vale is always looking for anyone who may wish to take the game up or are looking for a club to play for.
