The SIBA held the ladies and gents national singles, junior singles and two bowl pairs finals at West of Scotland IBC at the weekend.

Dumbarton IBC’s only hope of national success was Michelle Keenan who had again reached the semi-final of the ladies under-25 singles.

Michelle was runner up in 2012, and was hoping to go one better this year, with just two more matches between her and the title.  In the semi-final she faced experienced internationalist Ailsa Robertson (Dundee), and Michelle gave herself a great chance of reaching the final as she raced into a 10-4 lead. However, Ailsa showed her class and gritty determination as she fought back to draw level at 15-15, and then took the lead by 19-15.

Michelle fought back with two singles, but Ailsa delivered the final blow as she scored two, sealing a 21-17 victory. Michelle put in a great performance, and proved once again that she is one of the top players in Scotland in the under-25 age group.

Ailsa went on to face the previous year’s winner, and recently crowned world under-25 champion, Carrie McLean of Auchinleck in the final.

Ailsa delivered another excellent performance, but on the day was just outdone by 16-year-old Carrie. In the gents under-25 singles, Scott Wilson (Ardrossan) provided an Ayrshire double with victory over Coatbridge’s Martyn Jenkins.

Alex Fleming and Garry Johnstone took more silverware back to Auchinleck as he scooped the Gents Two Bowl Pairs with a 2-1 victory over Falkirk.

However, Auchinleck, and the Johnstone family, were denied a unique achievement as Garry’s twin sister Claire was just pipped in the Ladies Two Bowl Pairs final by Turriff.

In the Gents Singles, Inverurie schoolboy Jason Banks was beaten by current Scottish Outdoor Singles champion Iain McLean (Blantyre), as he claimed his third Indoor Singles crown.

Former ladies champion Lynn Stein (East Fife) also regained the National Singles with victory over Coatbridge’s Carol Condy. In the other final of the weekend, the under-18 singles, East Lothian’s Calum Darling received his first taste of national success with a well earned victory over Inverclyde’s John Fleming.
