PUPILS from across Dumbarton and the Vale showcased their athletic talent at a recent athletics competition.

The athletics sportshall competition, held at the Meadow Centre was enjoyed by a total of 10 local primary schools, with over 200 athletes competeting in a range of events to qualify for the West Dunbartonshire Leisure sportshall final.

Pupils were put through their paces in the standing long jump, triple jump, vertical jump, speed bounce, javelin and chest push before taking part in running events.

Knoxland Primary and St Patricks’s progressed to the final after finishing in the top two with 423 points and 363 points. They join St Mary’s Duntocher, Our Lady of Loretto, Christie Park and Gartocharn who have already qualified.

St Mary’s finished in third ahead of Dalreoch and Braehead to complete the top five.

Aitkenbar Primary finished with 240 points to end up sixth, St Kessog’s were seventh with 200 points whilst St Peter’s were eighth with 182 points. St Michael’s completed the competition in ninth whilst St Ronon’s were tenth with 168 points.

The final will be held at the Play Drome in Clydebank on Thursday, April 24.

Angus MacDonald, assistant sports development officer said: “Athletics is the driving force for life long participation in sport which begins with the fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing.” Anyone interested in taking part in Athletics is invited to come along to Run, Jump and Throw which takes place in the Meadow Centre on a Thursday from 6–7pm.
