Traditionally the swimmer’s strongest distance has been the 50m, which is the event he qualified for Glasgow 2014 in. However, that event is not on the Olympic schedule so Lamont’s best chance to get there is to make the step up to the 100m.

Lamont recently moved to Edinburgh to study at the city’s Napier University and has joined the University of Edinburgh’s senior swimming programme, which he thinks will boost his chances of improving to Olympic standard at 100m.

He said: “I’ve got raw speed on my side it’s just about getting the sustainability you need to do well at the 100m. I’ve got the resources at Edinburgh to do it.

“As a swimmer you take things a year at a time, aim to improve on last year’s time and get better.” The former West Dunbartonshire Amateur Swimming Club member found the perfect way to settle in to his new club — as he swam in the University of Edinburgh swim team which claimed victory in the first ever Scottish National Team Championships on Saturday, September 27.

He said: “It was good to compete in that competition, it was my first team trophy so it’s good to add that to my list of achievements.” Lamont admits the changes he has undergone in the past couple of months have taken time to bed in.

As well as moving clubs and coaches, he had to adjust back to his normal training and studying routine after the high of competing at Glasgow 2014.

He said: “It’s been a bit of a transition because I’ve always had the same coach.

“Glasgow was amazing, I was proud to be a part of it. The summer flew in, you build up to it for so long as an athlete and it was over in a flash.

After that it is hard to get back to the routine of training and uni.” There was an emotional return to his former club for Lamont on Saturday, October 4, he was in attendance at the Vale of Leven pool for West Dunbartonshire Amatuer Swimming Club’s annual club championships to collect a lifetime membership from the club.

He said: “It was really touching and great to be back. I’d like to thank everyone at the club for all the support they gave me while I was there.”
