A tense encounter at Garscube complex saw Accies secure a hard earned away point to extend their lead at the top of the table to two points.

Accies came to life around the 20 minute mark with two opportunities in quick succession. First an Alan Gourlay free kick reached Connor McGlinchey — whose flicked header went wide. Then a misplaced pass by a Uni defender to Accies forward Ton McHard saw a shot from 18 yards saved by Uni keeper Matthew Baines Uni responded with a good move between Eamon Nugent-Doyle and Donald Thompson which saw the latter shoot off target much to Accies’ relief.

On 38 minutes Accies keeper McGillivray produced the type of top class save that has seen him reach the Scotland Amateur squad — an excellent right handed save that prevented Thompson scoring from a header when a goal looked certain.

Accies took the lead just before the half time whistle. Following a pass from Alan Gourlay, Tom McHard found himself advancing on Baines who blocked well. The ball dropped to Conner McGlinchey 25 yards out, the forward shot towards goal and with the ball heading into the net Westerlands defender Laurens Dunn deliberately blocked with his hand. The defender was sent off for his efforts.

Tom McHard stepped up to score the penalty and the referee then blew for half-time.

Despite their man disadvantage Glasgow Uni performed well throughout the second half.

On 50 minutes a great cross by David Goodwin arrived at Alan Filshie — the midfielder scuffed his effort wide.

Accies came to rue their missed chances. From a seemingly comfortable position Accies keeper McGillivray sought to clear the ball upfield. His clearance saw the ball take a wicked deflection into the air and landed at Thompson 30 yards out. The quick thinking forward volleyed into the unguarded goal.

The Uni team sensed Accies were rocked by the equalising goal and almost took the lead on the hour. Nugent-Doyle was released on the right and shot was saved well by the foot of McGillivray.

For the last 20 minutes Accies upped the pace of the game in order to seek a winner. On 70 minutes a Tom McHard cross into the box was begging to be headed into the net but went unrewarded.

Despite their late pressure the point was a fair reflection of Accies efforts throughout a match.
