KIRKTONHILL Gent’s got their league season off to the perfect start with convincing 9-0 demolitions over their first two opponents.

First to visit the club were Hillhead 4. Conditions on the night were far from ideal with heavy skies and a steady drizzle but this did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the home team as they quickly took control on all three courts.

The first pair of Douglas Mackechnie and Andrew McCollum settled well and took their first set 6-0. It was much the same for the rest of the match and they won the remaining sets 6-2, 6-1. It was an especially impressive performance from young Andrew who showed great composure playing in the Gents League.

On court two the new pairing of Andy Bone and Alan Barbour proved to be a winning combination and they dominated their match with set wins of 6-2, 6-2, 6-0.

Tom Corcoran and Gordon Kydd were last up. After taking the first set 6-2, they found themselves 2-5 down in the second. To their credit they battled back to 5-5 and then managed to go on and win the set. Now firmly back in control, the Kirktonhill duo then took the last set 6-3.

It was very much the case of same again, with the visit of DL Renfrew 6. Having found the winning formula, Douglas and Andrew again started as the number one pair and again recorded a convincing win of 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.

The other pairings of Andy and Alan and Tom and Gordon also had comfortable wins. With 18 points already on the board, the team will look to keep their momentum going and will face their toughest test in the coming days with matches against the top two teams in the league.

The fortunes of the Ladies team have been more mixed but they got back into winning ways with their home match against Mount Vernon.

Karen Haggarty and Trish Cameron had one of their toughest matches so far, with two sets going to tie breaks. They eventually won the match 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.

At second couple were Fiona MacDonald and Karen Goodwin and they stormed ahead, winning the first two sets 6-0, 6-1 before taking the third set 6-3.

On the third court, it was all square after two sets before an injury to a Mount Vernon player brought the match top an early conclusion and gave the win to Anna Currie and Marissa Gordon. Final score 6-3 to Kirktonhill.
