DUMBARTON captain Darren Barr has revealed he is keen to stay on at Sons beyond his current deal which ends in January.

The defender signed for Dumbarton in the summer after two injury plagued seasons at Kilmarnock and then Ross County.

Sons boss Stevie Aitken quickly named Barr as his skipper and Aitken revealed in Reporter Sport two weeks ago that he would like to do a deal to keep Barr at the club.

The one time Scotland cap insists he would like to extend his stay at the Rock although he admitted he still has work to do if he is to earn a new contract.

He said: “Yeah I think I would be happy to stay on if I was offered a new deal. The thinking behind the length of the contract was they didn’t know how I would be with me knee.

“The gaffer has taken a chance on me. It is hard for me to just say I would like to stay, at the end of the day you have earn a contract. I’m really enjoying it but I need to earn my place with my performances.” Barr scored in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Morton. The loss leaves Sons in the Championship relegation play-off spot for the first time this season and with just one win in their last 10 league games.

Stunning wins over Hibs and St Mirren in the opening two fixtures seem a distant memory, however Barr insists Sons can get back to winning ways soon by getting back to basics and cutting out the individual mistakes which have cost them in recent weeks.

He said: “Maybe if we can get back to the basics and look at what we were doing well at the start. It is hard to put your finger on it.

“In the last few games maybe it is a bit of confidence has left but you only get that back by everyone sticking together and being a team.”
