DUMBARTON striker Garry Fleming struck what he described as “the best goal I’ve scored” to secure his home town club’s Championship safety.

Fleming sealed the Sons’ dramatic 2-1 victory against St Mirren with a sensational half-volley and put it straight to the top of his personal list.

He said: “I’m not sure if it took a deflection out to me and it’s sat up nice and I’ve just hit it.

“Luckily it flew into the top corner and we got the win through it. It’s probably the best goal I’ve scored.”

The 28-year-old, who revealed he is happy to extend his contract at the club, revelled in the full-time celebrations after the victory over a team he could have joined at the start of the season.

“They tried to sign me last summer but it wasn’t right for me at the time and Dumbarton is my home club,” he said.

“I love the supporters and I love this club. I decided to stay here with the gaffer coming in and I’m glad I stayed.

“I know a lot of them (the fans) from being around here so it’s good to have them there and they’ve been a great support to us all season.”

Sons’ number nine paid credit to his teammates for the determination they showed to overcome the odds and avoid relegation.

He said: “It was a great team performance. I thought we deserved it throughout the full game and the boys gave everything they had to get the win to secure our place in the Championship again next season.

“With full-time teams, people aren’t expecting us to pick points up against them. We’ve shown that we can go and compete and we deserve to be in this league next year.”
