Dumbarton ended their season with a 1-1 draw against relegated Alloa at the Indodrill Stadium on Sunday.

The game had an a typical end of season feel with both teams already knowing their fates.

There was a party atmosphere in the away end at the Indodrill Stadium as Sons fans arrived in Clackmannanshire knowing their Championship status was secure, many came in fancy dress for a season ending party.

However they were quickly subdued by an early Alloa goal. Calum Waters gave the ball away cheaply on the left wing, Michael Duffy took full advantage and played a great ball to Isaac Layne who held off Steven Saunders before finishing well on the turn.

Sons had started like a team already on their holidays and they were nearly two down after nine minutes. On loan Celtic striker Duffy struck a terrific free kick from 25 yards which crashed off the crossbar.

Dumbarton's first real chance came in the 26th minute. Kevin Cawley robbed Steven Hetherington on the right, his cross was met by the arriving Tom Walsh and the on-loan Rangers man almost got lucky when his sliced shot nearly spun into the top corner but it crept wide.

The away side had started to get a foothold in the game but they soon had the woodwork to thank once again for keeping the deficit at one. Former Son Mitch Megginson played a ball through for Layne, the front man held off a couple of challenges before sliding a shot beyond Ewings but it bounced off the inside of the post and was cleared.

Steven Saunders prompted Wasps goalkeeper Scott Gallacher into a smart save just before half time, the former Motherwell defender's shot on the turn was well dealt with and turned behind.

Dumbarton boss Stevie Aitken brought on Donald McCallum for Garry Fleming at half-time and the youngster had an immediate impact. A Calum Waters corner after 51 minutes was headed down by Gregor Buchanan and McCallum was first to react to bring Sons level. Amazingly it was Dumbarton's first away goal of 2016.

Dumbarton almost turned the game on its head moments later when McCallum found Kevin Cawley in space. The former Alloa man's shot was goal bound but his old teammate Dougie Hill was in the right place to clear off the line.

Sons were turning up the heat. Waters made good ground on the left to hit the byline before delivering and inviting cross for Cawley at the back post but he couldn't direct his header on target.

With four minutes remaining Alloa passed up a glorious opportunity to seal the win. Robbie Crawford picked out fellow substitute Scott Hynd at the back post, with acres of space he looked set to win the tie but his header dropped just wide of the post.

Hynd had an almost identical chance a few minutes later, this time from an Iain Flannigan cross but again he couldn't find the target.
