Dumbarton manager Stevie Aitken is hopeful of making further additions to his squad this week as the start of the season draws nearer.

The Sons boss returned from holiday on Sunday and went straight from the plane to pre-season training as he began to run the rule over players for the upcoming campaign, which starts in July.

As well as the nine players Aitken has currently signed up, former Rangers winger Tom Walsh and Dale Hilson were also down training with Dumbarton.

Walsh made 14 appearances for the Sons on loan in 2016 under Aitken. The 20-year-old spent the first half of last season at St Mirren, before he returned to his parent club Rangers and was later released in January, also playing several games for Irish side Limerick.

Hilson, 24, has spent the last two seasons at Queen of the South, scoring five times in 28 appearances.

Aitken said: “He [Tom Walsh] is one we’re looking to sign. He did well in his short spell with us and when he was at Rangers and he wants to get his career back on track.

“He’s seen what we’ve done with the likes of Andy Stirling, Robert Thomson, Alan Martin, giving guys an opportunity to go back to full-time.

“He knows me and Ian [Durrant] well – he’s in training with us and we’ll sit down with him today and see how it goes.

“Dale is one that’s been training with us as well. There are a few teams interested in him, where that one goes I’m not sure, we’ll have to wait and see.

“He’s one we’d like to get in but I know there are two or three other clubs speaking to him as well. When other clubs are interested and are offering full-time football then it puts you on the back-burner a wee bit.

“Hopefully now I’m back we can push ahead [with signing players]. A lot of calls were made and now that I’m back I’m working flat out.

“We were back in training last night and tonight, so hopefully we can get one or two more signed up this week.”

Aitken was also keen to tie up loan deals for Patrick Thistle’s James Penrice and Hibernian’s Ryan Porteous.

Left-back Penrice, 18, has made two appearances for Thistle, and spent last season on loan at East Fife.

18-year-old Porteous, who plays centre-back, was on loan at League Two side Edinburgh City last year.

He added: “We’ve got good relationships with those clubs and obviously we’re a Championship club and Premier League clubs are looking to get players out.

“We’re in contact with those two clubs and hopefully we can get those two tied up.”
