DUMBARTON boss Jim Chapman insists the Sons support can inspire his side to victory ahead of their crucial home clash with Stenhousemuir on Saturday.

Chapman called on fans to give Dumbarton the edge in the game against the Warriors.

He watched his troops slump to a humiliating 6-0 defeat against East Fife at Methill a fortnight ago.

But Chapman believes the Strathclyde Homes Stadium support can be the 12th man and give their team the backing needed to banish that defeat and give them their first league win of the campaign.

He said: “If ever there was a time when the team needed the fans’ support, it is now.

“If the fans play a part at home, it will give us a lift.”

Dumbarton defender Paul Nugent also called on the Dumbarton faithful to back the side during their difficult period.

He said: “The East Fife game was probably the worst I have been involved in.

“But the fans are huge to us, especially at this time.

“We need everyone to get behind the wheel and drive us on.

“The fans have been great and I think in years gone by it has been worse than this.

“But I’m sure they believe that we can kick on and get that first victory.”

Nugent is still confident the Sons can get on the right track.

He has learned from his past experience at Stirling Albion in 2006 where they failed to record a win in 11 matches before going on an unstoppable unbeaten run until the end of that season’s campaign.

He said: “It is a long season and we have only played four games out of 36.

“I remember four years ago at Stirling we managed to get three points out of the first 11 games and they were all draws, no wins.

“So I am confident we can turn it around but the sooner the better.”

Dumbarton’s clash with Stenny kicks off at 3pm this Saturday at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium.
