DUMBARTON boss Stevie Aitken is refusing to get carried away with his new side’s pre-season form — despite the team showing signs that a good campaign could lie ahead.

Sons ran out 1-0 winners over Edinburgh City in Aitken’s first game in charge, while last year’s Championship title winners Hearts were on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat on their visit to the Rock on Thursday.

Despite seeing early promise, Aitken is erring on the side of caution, he insists his squad still has a long way to go but will be ready for the Petrofac Training Cup tie at Morton on July 25.

He said: “It is always great to win the early games, I thought we played well and there were a lot of pleasing aspects.

“The main thing is it is a fitness exercise for the players.

“But I could see some of the ideas we have put across to the players in pre-season during the last two matches which is good. There are still one or two things we are not too happy about which is understandable with almost a totally new squad, but hopefully with a few more games and time to gel we will be ready for the Morton game.” With the arrival of former Hamilton Accies midfielder Jon Routledge and Calum Waters, on loan from Celtic, Aitken’s squad is nearing completion. However he revealed there is still money in the club’s coffers for further recruits, and a striker is his number one priority.

He said: “There is still some room for movement, we are looking for another striker. A lot of clubs will be looking for strikers who score goals so we have to be patient.

“We’ve made enquires about a few, there is no rush but hopefully we can get something sorted this week.”
