The first game, at Millburn Park on Wednesday night, saw Hugh Hamill's men take on amateur side St Pat's FPs.

Although the St Pat's side fought well, the Vale proved too strong and ran out 2-1 winners.

David McNaught opened the scoring for the Vale after half an hour and Arthur added a second 55 minutes into the friendly.

Smith pulled a goal back for the amateurs but the Vale held on for their first pre-season win.

The Vale went into the match knowing they faced a tough 90 minutes, against the team from the Central First Division, however, an impressive performance ensured Hamill's men took a moral boosting 3-2 win.

Scott Thornton opened the scoring for the home side after just nine minutes, but 10 minutes later the scores were level when Stuart Arnot netted for Carluke.

Following such a bright start Hugh Hamill and the Vale support were left disappointed after half an hour when Gordon Murphy gave Carluke a 2-1 lead.

However, the Vale kept battling and Lee McGeachy equalised shortly before half time with a long range effort.

At half-time, Hamill introduced Brooks Tadlock and David Meechan for Gordon Martin and Andrew Orr before bringing on Ross Willis for Scott Thornton on the hour mark. Willis made an immediate impact, setting up Arthur to slot the ball into the net and give the Vale a 3-2 win.
