FIRE fighters battled at blaze at a former school in Dumbarton in the early hours of this morning. Emergency services were called to the old Keil School on Helenslee Road, Kirktonhill, around 1.14am after reports of flames leaping from the roof.

Two engines from Dumbarton Community fire station attended and were on the scene within minutes.

On arrival, firefighters discovered that the fire was burning on the ground floor, first floor and roof space.

The battled the blaze for more than four hours, before returning to base around 5.30am.

The cause is unknown and strathclyde police and fire and rescue will conduct a joint investigation.

Keil School was a private boarding school, educating around 200 pupils every year.

It was an all-boys school up until 1978, when it became co-educational.

It closed in July 2000 and is being redeveloped for housing.
