At this time of year grass, heather, and forested areas are at particularly high risk from fire and crews are now working with the community, the police and businesses in a bid to minimise the opportunity for deliberate fire-setting.

Last year the Reporter revealed how the town’s top fire and police chiefs had said mindless youths are putting residents’ lives in danger.

Area Commander Paul Connelly told the Reporter: “Contrary to popular belief heath and grass land fires are not good for the countryside, especially when set by people indiscriminately.

“There are many consequences to these incidents which many either take for granted or simply ignore. On many occasions our natural wildlife can be greatly affected by losing their habitats, food or indeed can be cut off and sadly killed by the actions of a few.” Anyone who has information on people involved in deliberate fire setting should contact the police via the non-emergency number 101 or by calling Crimestoppers Scotland on 0800 555 111.
