Budding sport stars of the future were celebrated at the West Dunbartonshire School Games last Wednesday.

The games are an initiative created by the Active Schools and Sports Development services of West Dunbartonshire Leisure and were established following the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The initiative aims to increase the profile of school sport in the area, encourage enable and inspire the participation of young people and leave a lasting legacy of school sport competition.

Dumbarton and the Vale schools Gartocharn and Christie Park scooped the "small school" and "medium school" awards respectively. Knoxland picked up third place in the "large school" award category.

Louise Morrison, Active Schools coordinator, told the Reporter: “The awards night is a great way to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the schools and their pupils at the West Dunbartonshire School Games competitions and festivals they have taken part in throughout the year.

“It also highlights the various ways sport can have a positive impact across the curriculum; allowing pupils to develop life skills such as communication, team work, time management, planning and organisation skills through leadership training, being on sports committees and coaching.”
