Heroes from Dumbarton and the Vale are in the running to be recognised for their efforts at the Provost’s Civic Awards.

A care home volunteer and walking club organiser are just a few of those who have been nominated for going above and beyond in their actions.

One youngster, however, has already been revealed as the winner in his category.

Eight-year-old Harry Crossan has been named this year’s Youth Champion after he used first aid training organised by his school to save his two-year-old sister Evie’s life when she choked at home last year.

Mum Debbie, 40, told the Reporter: “We are really looking forward to the night. Harry still does not get the magnitude of what he has done.

“He took it all in his stride, dealt with it and moved on.

“Things could have been so different for us and I think all kids should be taught some level of first aid.”

The Bonhill Primary pupil will receive his award in front of his mum, dad, gran and great gran at Clydebank Town Hall, when all of the other champions from across West Dunbartonshire will be announced.

It is the third time Harry has been recognised for his action, most recently picking up the Take a Break Little Superhero prize, but this time Debbie has decided to only tell the youngster he is in the running.

She explained: “Last time he got an award he knew he was winning, but this time we have built up the participating and meeting others who have been nominated.”

Elsewhere, Dumbarton Highland dancer and current Scottish champion Dana-Louise Dolan has been nominated in the arts and culture category, while Paul Kane and Phil Dawson, who are also from the town, have been nominated for the sports champion award.

This year Paul became the first unseeded winner of the Bowls Scotland Gents Super Series singles, while Phil launched the Vale of Leven Walking Football Club

In the community/voluntary champions (team) category, the Food 4 Thought food bank team within St Augustine’s Church has been nominated, as has the Dumbarton District MS Group.

In the individual community/voluntary category Dumbarton man Brian McCluskey, who has volunteered in local care homes since retiring in 2003, is in the running.

Provost Hendrie said: “Everyone who was nominated for this year’s awards should be immensely proud of themselves. It was a difficult task to select a shortlist.”
