Drivers in Dumbarton are being warned of forthcoming road closures caused by repair work costing £2 million on a railway bridge at a busy section of the town.
Closures and diversions will be in place until Monday November 5 as Network Rail carries out work on the bridge over Bonhill Road.
The current bridge is beginning to degrade and needs to be replaced to ensure a safe and reliable rail service through the town.
Railway services will be replaced by buses over the weekend of October 20-21 while the old bridge deck is craned out and the new one positioned into place.
In order to replace the bridge, there will also be a series of road closures, although exceptions will be made for local access.
Until October 13 – overnight temporary traffic lights on Townend Road
October 13 to 28 – closure of Bonhill Road, from Round Riding Road to south of railway bridge
October 13 to 28 – closure of Bankend Road from Townend Road to Bonhill Road
October 20 – a series of four 1 hour-long road closures on Townend Road (to allow bridge decks to be moved)
October 22 to 23 – overnight temporary traffic lights on Townend Road.
Owen Ferry, Network Rail project manager, said: “The work we are undertaking is vital to the long-term operation of the railway.
"We understand the inconvenience the work will cause to some motorists and are committed to completing the project as quickly as possible.
“This is the most effective and quickest way to deliver the project, and we working hard to try to limit the impact of our works on road users and nearby residents.”
West Dunbartonshire Council has pledged to keep restrictions to a minimum.
