A GROUND-breaking charity which runs a club in Dumbarton is looking to recruit more members.

Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland is aiming to develop its membership participation and also to recruit volunteers to help with its work in West Dunbartonshire

The charity is believed to be the first of its kind for the older generation.

It employs sports reminiscence, inclusive physical activities and intergenerational activities to support isolated older people across the area.

It is the charitable arm of award-winning Sporting Memories Network Scotland, a social enterprise that runs weekly sporting memories clubs and groups, which brings together older people living with long-term conditions such as dementia through sporting reminiscence.

Its main aim, which it has been successful in doing so far, is to improve the well-being of people, as well as reducing loneliness and social isolation.

As well as other activities in the West Dunbartonshire area, currently, there is a Sporting Memories Club at Dumbarton Library on every Monday from 10am to 12pm.

By using images of sport, articles and memorabilia, older people are assisted to stay connected to their friends and communities, cognitively stimulated and physically active.

Maurice Donohue, chief operating officer told the Reporter: “This is another exciting development in our aims to support older people across Scotland and to connect generations through the power of sport.

“It is crucial we enable more people to be physically active and involved in fun, stimulating interests that help create new friendships.”

Anyone interested in attending the club as a member or looking to volunteer, should contact Maurice on 07393 284406 or by e-mail at maurice@thesmf.co.uk for further details.
