Three talented young performers from Dumbarton and the Vale will be taking to the stage at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall this month after landing dream musical roles.

Jessica Smith, Mark Morrison and Callum Latham are all members of the kids cast which will be performing in the 5th Annual Movies to Musicals concert produced by Glasgow Philharmonia.

The trio will be performing iconic numbers from Cats and Mary Poppins, before performing the Pharaoh’s Song from Joseph alongside Britain’s Got Talent star Lucy Kay who was the narrator in the West End version of the hit musical.

At the end they will return to the stage with Lucy, West End and Broadway stars John Owen-Jones and Kerry Ellis, and the rest of the show’s performers for the finale - “From Now On” from The Greatest Showman.

More than 240 applied for the show and 170 were auditioned in a West End style process by Glasgow Philharmonia founder and the show’s conductor Ross Gunning, creative director and the kids cast director, who then whittled this number down to the final 33.

Ross told the Reporter: “For any kids to get in this year was a challenge and we feel that we have got the most talented 33 kids in Scotland.

“They will be singing and dancing the whole way through. At the end of the show with the kids cast, the musical theatre cast and the Rock choir there will be close to 400 on the stage at the end of the night.

“Every audience member leaves buzzing and wanting more. There is always a standing ovation. I get more and more excited every year and I think this will be the biggest one yet.”

Mark, who will be singing the opening solo in Cats, has been singing and dancing since the age of three when he attended Stewarts School of Dancing in his hometown of Alexandria.

He currently attends Singer Station School in the town and has sung as a soloist at the Denny Civic Theatre and King’s Theatre in Glasgow and has performed locally at the Christmas lights switch on and charity concerts.

Last May he reached the grand final of national musical theatre singing competition – West End Calling - after being selected by West End stars from hundreds of hopefuls across the UK.

Fellow performer Callum from Bonhill, who has a solo in the Mary Poppins performance, is a student of the Stellar musical theatre company, PQA Glasgow and Clydebank Musical Society.

He has performed as Peter in Peter Pan at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was recently invited to sing back up for The Opera Boys at their Glasgow concert.

Jessica from Dumbarton, meanwhile, is the youngest of the three and attends St Patrick’s Primary.

She has been singing and dancing since the age of two and is also looking forward to playing Charlotte in the Stellar Musical Theatre Company’s production of 13 in the Summer.

Her mum Margaret said: “She is loving it and is delighted to be in the cast.”
