A Dumbarton man has just spent his second birthday behind bars in India.

Jagtar Singh Johal, 32, was locked up just days before he was supposed to be married in November 2017.

Known as Jaggi, he was initially jailed without being charged, and has now been to court a staggering 73 times for pre-trial hearings.

Indian authorities have yet to produce even a 'shred' of evidence against him, but the former Our Lady and St Patrick's pupil has now been charged under anti-terror laws for allegedly financing the murder of Hindu nationalist leader Ravinder Gosain.

Jaggi's family have always claimed the charges against him are 'baseless', and that he has faced alleged torture from his captors.

West Dunbartonshire MP, Martin Docherty-Hughes, has previously raised the issue in parliament, and has written to ministers a number of times, but so far has had no success in securing Jaggi's release.

The SNP MP said: "For a second year in a row Jagtar has been forced to spend his birthday alone in a prison cell in India away from his family, friends, and loved ones here in Dumbarton.

"After more than 70 pre-trial hearings and delays, there has yet to be a shred of evidence presented against my constituent.

"Nor has there been any investigation allowed into the serious concerns raised about his torture and mistreatment by the Indian authorities.

"But we haven't lost hope yet. The #FreeJaggiNow campaign continues to press for transparency, justice and due process on Jagtar's behalf.

Mr Docherty-Hughes also said support from across the globe had been 'hugely appreciated' by Jaggi's family.
