West Dunbartonshire residents have been signing a petition calling to revoke Article 50 to leave the EU.

More than 1,200 people locally have backed the call that started on Thursday in the midst of continued confusion over the entire Brexit project.

The law currently states the UK will leave the EU on March 29.

Clydebank MSP Gil Paterson told the Reporter: "West Dunbartonshire voted strongly to remain in the EU and that was way before we witnessed the complete incompetent shambles going on in Westminster at the moment.

“The prime minister’s handling of Brexit has been an absolute disaster – and, with just days to go, we’re still none the wiser as to what on earth is going on. And all the prime minister can do is blame everyone else.

“The fact that more than a million people have now signed this petition speaks volumes. Scotland didn’t vote for Brexit and we should not be dragged out of the EU against our will.

“The strength of feeling in Clydebank and across Scotland is crystal clear – we deserve a choice over the future.”

Mr Paterson said 1,200 people from West Dunbartonshire had signed the potential as of the time of his statement.

The number so far is still a fraction of the total 44,083 people who voted in the last Westminster election in 2017. The 1.1 million signatures on the petition is still dwarfed by the votes on both sites of the EU referendum in 2016.
