Dumbarton-born international TV star James Cosmo is set to return to his hometown to take on a new role - helping to lead the parade in an ambitious new event.

The actor will be back in the area for the four-day Dumbarton 2020 festival, which aims to showcase the town's rich history and tourist potential.

The Scot, who currently plays Jeor Mormont in Game of Thrones, was born in Dumbarton Cottage Hospital and attended Hartfield Primary School in the town.

As well as his role in the acclaimed series, which returned for an eighth and final season this week, James is also known for his appearances in Braveheart, Trainspotting, Outlaw King, Sons of Anarchy and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Later this year, he is due to star in the BBC's highly-anticipated adaptation of Philip Pullman’s famed His Dark Materials alongside fellow Scottish actor James McAvoy.

Organised by a team of local volunteers, community groups and West Dunbartonshire Council, Dumbarton 2020 aims to put the town on the international map by attracting visitors from across the globe for the family-orientated spectacle.

It is estimated the festival will involve approximately 75 per cent of school pupils and 25 per cent of the wider local community.
