Pupils battled it out recently as they took part in the Sports Development athletics final at Clydebank Leisure Centre.

Teams from Gavinburn, Christie Park, St Michael’s, Gartocharn, Knoxland and Lennox primaries gave it their all as they competed in their teams against several Clydebank schools.

Every P6 in West Dunbartonshire has had the chance to participate in four weeks of school athletics - a total of more than 1,100 pupils.

This was the final festival after four heats, with two teams per heat invited to the final as well as the next two runners up overall.

Gayle Brown, assistant Sports Development officer at West Dunbartonshire Leisure, said: “I would like to thank all schools for participating and I hope everyone enjoyed their day. It was great to see so many young people getting active and loving athletics.

“The athletes participated in both track and field events and were superbly supported by their fellow athletes, supporters and teachers during each event.

“Congratulations to St Mary’s Duntocher who will be progressing as the West Dunbartonshire winners to the Sports Hall Athletics regional finals next year.

“Special thanks to the National 4 sports students from West College Scotland – Clydebank campus, as the festivals would not have run without their support, as well as the superb sports development coaches who went into every school and coached the athletes .

“Thanks to Provost William Hendrie and WD Leisure’s director, David Marshall, for coming along to the final to hand out medals to our winners.”
