A record-breaking number of young people donned their running shoes for this year’s West Dunbartonshire Schools Cross Country Relay at Balloch Castle Country Park.

No less than 860 pupils took part in the event, which was open to all P5-7s and S1-S3S and organised by West Dunbartonshire Leisure Sports Development Team.

It involved teams of three pupils who all had to run one lap of the cross country route (1.2km for primary pupils and 1.4km for secondary pupils).

The event forms part of WD Leisure’s School Games programme where schools participate in a multitude of sports events across the year.

Schools gain points for participating and also for their positioning in competitive events that all contribute to their final placing in the School Games leagues.

Angus MacDonald, sports development co-ordinator with WD Leisure, said: “Our cross country events are always extremely well supported and attended by local schools and this year saw us have a record entry level of 820 participants! This is quite an incredible achievement.

"The event is always exciting with each team consisting of three pupils who have to work well as a team to run round the course as fast as they can.

"The atmosphere was amazing in what is a spectacular setting in Balloch Castle Country Park on the banks of Loch Lomond.

"It’s a competitive event, however, we pride ourselves in making all of our events lots of fun and focus on supporting young people to build their confidence and self-esteem by representing their school and being part of a team. Well done to everyone who took part.”
