A Luss photographer is to have his work exhibited in London after being recognised by the City of Glasgow College's art foundation for his hard work and talent.

Martin Gibb, who is on the BA honours photography course at the institution, has won the College Art Foundation Medal for Excellence along with an accompanying bursary of £1,000.

He said: “I would never have believed when I started my NC photography five years ago that I would win such a prestigious award. It is a great surprise and I am truly humbled.

“Coming back to college as a mature student has been really enjoyable. I have developed so much and my appetite for learning is ignited again.

"I could not have done it without the support of my tutors who have inspired and guided me along the way.

“I would also like to mention my wife Jackie, who has been so supportive throughout the duration of my degree.”

Martin’s winning images will be on display at this year’s Free Range exhibition in London this week.

It specialises in showcasing the work of over 800 photography and fine art graduates from colleges and universities across the UK.

The 51-year-old has also been shortlisted for the Association of Photographers Student Awards 2019.

He added: “This final honours year at City of Glasgow College has been both challenging and fulfilling.

"My eyes have been opened to the world of photography through my time here, and my future is brighter for it.

"Winning the art foundation medal will allow me to expand my horizons, hold my own exhibitions and enhance my visibility as a photographer.”

The grant which accompanied the medal is provided to support Martin’s continued study and development as an exceptional photographer.

John Carberry Curriculum Head of Photography at City of Glasgow College, told the Reporter: “Martin has a natural affinity with the environment and has settled his focus on water with strikingly beautiful results.

"As someone with a background in the navy, he has been in, or around, water for much of his life.

“Our photography degree course has allowed him to finally explore something which he had a deep understanding of and his abstract waterscapes capture the continual motion which he has been a part of for so long.

To see Martin's work come to such a poetic and accomplished level has been a pleasure to watch emerge.”
