An ALEXANDRIA teenager has won a top award at the performing arts academy she attends in her spare time.

Lauren Hunter has been named by tutors at the Glasgow-based UK Theatre School (UKTS) as the recipient of the school’s annual Senior Musical Theatre Student of the Year award.

They cited the 14-year-old’s “exceptionally focused efforts and dedicated passion” throughout her time at the school as the key to her success.

Lauren received her plaque and certificate at the UKTS’s annual prize-giving ceremony which recognises their students of the year in various age groups and categories.

The Our Lady and St Patrick’s High School pupil said: “I was so shocked and overwhelmed when I heard my name being called - I had a rush of adrenaline. I’m delighted that my teachers picked me because of all my hard work in class and I’m thrilled to know it’s paying off.

“I’m improving in aspects I struggle with and will continue to work hard and develop my performing arts skills.

“I’m learning in an environment where my classmates all want to pursue a career in the arts and have a mature outlook on learning which makes classes enjoyable and productive.”

UKTS has around 700 students on its roll, and offers performing arts courses for students aged from between three and 18.

Lauren has been attending the school for four years and eventually plans to go on and audition for degree courses which would allow her to pursue a career in musical theatre or acting.

As well as excelling in her UKTS course work, she has participated in a number of the school’s productions.

Lauren’s mother Elisabeth added: “I’ve watched Lauren grow into a dedicated, passionate and skilled performer.

“Every night she leaves class happy and excited for what lies ahead.

“You can see in Lauren’s performances and attitude that the standard of training and teaching is incredibly high. Lauren loves going to these classes so much she would attend every day if she could.”

Lizanne Lambie Thomson, UKTS principal, described Lauren as “a very committed young talent” and said: “Our tutors see Lauren as having a truly focused commitment to her performing arts training. Lauren’s enthusiasm knows no limits and she works very hard on everything she does in class.

“She certainly is a very deserving winner of this special award.”
