Dumbarton man zips across the Clyde for Alzheimer’s Scotland

Tommy Kane says he felt no fear as he was lifted 150ft into the air before zip sliding across the Clyde in front of a supportive band of family and workmates.

The 65-year-old decided to take on the daredevil stunt as the organisation has helped his family cope and come to terms with the news that his wife Susan, 60, is suffering from early onset dementia.

He initially set-up a Just Giving page with a £400 target, but has since completely smashed this figure by raising more than £2,000.

Tommy, a civilian worker at Clydebank police office, told the Reporter: “It was excellent and a cracking day weather wise. It took about 13 to 15 seconds to get across the Clyde.

“I wasn’t in the least bit worried, as I knew it was just me taking one step off and that was it really. You didn’t really get a chance to worry about it when you were on it.

“When you go up you get put in a cradle with six or seven other people who are doing it for the same charity. We had a right good blether before just supporting one another. Another girl was nervous but she loved every second of it.

“The only thing was, I left facing the crane, so I didn’t get the chance to see the ones supporting me. I would do it again, but hopefully facing down the way.

“The Just Giving page is sitting at over £1,600 with more money still to come in, so it will be over £2,000 which is really good for the charity.”

Tommy and Susan have a son Allan and two daughters Marie and Jennifer as well as eight grandchildren.

The Dumbarton resident said Susan, who was diagnosed with the condition in September 17, is “not doing too badly” and sings with Alzheimer Scotland’s Every Voice Choir in West Dunbartonshire every fortnight.

Writing on the Just Giving page he said: “They bring a cheery song and a bit of happiness to others and enjoy themselves while doing it.

“These activities rely solely on charitable funds and I would like to do my wee bit to help. I have decided to do this stunt to support them as trust me you don’t want to hear me sing.”
