A DOTING dad has offered hundreds of pounds to anyone with information after a car carrying his grandchildren was reportedly struck by a hit-and-run driver.

Brian Starmore, 55, raced to the scene of the McDonald’s in Balloch after getting a call from his step-daughter, saying her car had been struck by a runaway driver who then made off.

When he arrived at the restaurant, the Alexandria man learned from a witness what happened.

He told the Reporter the driver reversed out of his space, taking off “like the hammers of hell”, before ramming the side of his step-daughter’s car, which was reversing out of her space at the time.

According to the witness, as well as the victim, the man got out of the car and said there was “no damage”, before verbally abusing Brian’s step-daughter, and taking off down Balloch Road.

Brian said that she was “shaken up” after the crash - her first since she passed her test.

That night, Brian’s five-year-old grandson was taken to hospital after complaining of a sore head. Thankfully, nothing was found to be amiss and he was discharged.

Since the accident, which took place on Friday, July 5, the family has been on a mission to discover who was responsible, but have had no luck.

Brian said: “We’ve been to McDonald’s and they said the CCTV doesn’t cover the car park, and I’ve been to The Princess Rose [Chinese restaurant nearby], and they said the same.

“The police also told me the cameras on Balloch Road are ‘hopeless’, and they haven’t been able to get anything.”

Brian admitted that he was “very annoyed” by the lack of cameras in the area.

He said: “In this day and age, I have a camera at my house that will show me every single car that passes by, so I don’t see why that’s not the same.”

As a last resort, Brian has offered his own reward for information which leads to the driver being caught.

He has announced plans to pay anyone who reports the name of the driver, or the registration of the car, to him or the police £600 - the same as the insurance excess on the car.

Brian said: “What this guy did was illegal. It’s against the law to leave the scene of an accident, or to not report it. We want to see him in court for this.”

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “We can confirm there was a report of a silver BMW striking a grey VW Golf on July 5.

“The driver of the BMW failed to exchange details with the other driver and made off. Enquiries are ongoing.”
