HELENSBURGH’S generous residents raised more than £5,000 for the fight against cancer on Sunday – despite the weather, yet again, doing its best to get in the way.
The town’s annual Stand Up To Cancer family festival moved mostly indoors to a new home at Hermitage Academy after being disrupted by wind and rain for the last two years.
And the change of venue by the organising team, from the town’s Cancer Research UK charity shop, proved to be a smart decision as yet more poor weather forced the cancellation of one of the event’s outdoor animal activities.

Happily, though, the rest of the day went without a hitch – and saw a total of £5,700 raised for the charity’s annual Stand Up To Cancer appeal.
Entertainment came from the Urbaniks Street School of Dance, magician Leigh Milne, live local band Hot Ratz and performances of some of the biggest hits from ‘Matinee At The Musicals 2’, the stage show which was performed in full in Helensburgh earlier this year.

Alison Sturgeon, who leads the organising of the event, said: “We had a fantastic time and are delighted to have raised so much money on one day for life saving research. We are grateful to everyone who attended and took part."
