A TEAM of loyal Dumbarton fans will be pulling on the famous black and gold and taking to the pitch after starting their own supporters’ team.

Michael McVey, 19, and Dylan Ellis, 20, were approached by an Airdrieonians fan three weeks ago and, with the help of Sean Stewart, 22, have got a squad together and are set to compete in 10 friendlies this season.

Against supporter’s teams of other clubs in Scotland, games will take place on the mornings of the first-team games, typically between the same clubs.

The new side have already raised £500 for kits and had their first friendly last Wednesday against Cardross, losing 7-2.

But the boys remain optimistic and are looking forward to the games ahead. McVey said: “There’s a squad of 30 bodies just now so it’s a tough job trying to organise a team for match days.

“We’ve had a few sessions of five-a-sides to get boys who haven’t played much recently back playing and seeing where we are ability wise.

“We hope to provide a platform for boys to get back playing football and representing the team they love while having fun along the way.

“After finding out we had a platform to both play football and watch Dumbarton on the same day, it was a no brainer.

“We don’t aim to play a few friendlies and say we tried – we want to have a squad of committed boys ready to represent Dumbarton for years to come.”

News of the boys’ mission quickly spread to social media with Dumbarton players, past and present, doing their bit to help out. Dumbarton captain Stuart Carswell and former Sons favourite Pat Walker have donated to the JustGiving page with first-team player Lewis Crawford supplying the team with food after their game against Cardross and club kitman Robert Brooks supplying kit.

Mental health charity Back Onside will be supporting the club and local company S1 Auto Services will also be a sponsor.
