Dramas ranging from 18th century court intrigue to the story of Elton John will feature in Cove and Kilcreggan Film Society’s 2019-20 season.

Ten films are scheduled for Cove Burgh Hall on Thursday evenings, as well as two Saturday matinees for children.

Starting the season on October 10 is Rocket Man, the 2019 musical biopic starring Taron Egerton, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Richard Madden which is being tipped as a front-runner in the Oscars.

Critic Mark Kermode described it as “a riotous fact-meets-fiction swirl that combines the Brit-pic grit of That’ll Be The Day with the colourful ambition of Absolute Beginners and the surreal excesses of Lisztomania, all tied together by a barnstorming central performance from Taron Egerton”.

The first film in November is the multiple Oscar-winning Green Book, Peter Farrelly’s biographical comedy-drama inspired by the true story of a tour of the Deep South by African American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley (played by Mahershala Ali) and Italian American bouncer Frank ‘Tony Lip’ Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) who served as Shirley’s driver and bodyguard.

That is followed on November 28 by Stan and Ollie, with Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly starring in the story of the world’s most famous comedy duo.

The Christmas film on December 12 has not yet been confirmed, but the new year will open on January 9 with The Favourite – nominated for ten Oscars, it stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz in a tale of intrigue and love at the court of Queen Anne.

Kate Winslet stars in Australian revenge comedy-drama The Dressmaker on February 13, followed two weeks later by Wild Rose – Jessie Buckley, Sophie Okonedo and Julie Walters feature in the story of a Scottish woman fresh out of prison who juggles her job and two children while pursuing her dream of becoming a country music star.
