WEST Dunbartonshire are “on track” to meet new government regulations on nursery care.

The Scottish Government has mandated that local authorities provide 1140 hours of high quality early learning and childcare for all Scottish three and four-year-olds by the 2020/21 school year.

Since the announcement of the measure, councils have been on the lookout for a staffing boost to help deliver the service.

At a meeting of the education committee last week, lead officer for education, Kathy Morrison, said good progress was being made on meeting the target.

She told the meeting: “We’re continuing to work with different departments to realise our plans.

“We’re on track to deliver our plans by August 2020.

“We’re working closely with our funding partners.

“We will continue to work towards the new standard.”

Depute Provost Karen Conaghan, who was chairing the meeting, said:“We seem to be very much on track with it, other local authorities haven’t found it so easy, or maybe that’s just staff we have making it look easier.”
